I cosigned a loan and now my credit report and credit scores show an attachment paragraph/statement.
I am a 57 year old female who was in better than good credit shape until 2001 when I co-signed a loan for $5,000 to help my oldest daughter establish good credit. I did the same thing for her with her cell phone. She made the payments for at least a year, I moved 200 miles away thinking everything was OK, did not think to advise the bank and cell company's of my change of address, and a year later the phone began to ring. She had been given an additional $5,000 in credit and max'd out the card. She hadn't made a payment in over a year. When she could no longer pay her cell phone bill, she simply turned off the phone and made the bills disappear, avoided the collectors and moved from time to time to keep herself unavailable. You don't want to know the BS she sold me~
When I moved I applied for a mortgage loan. I was overqualified to purchase the simple home in West Eugene. I was denied the loan and given my credit report. During the next 18 months, I paid off all the credit debts, settling the $10,000 with the collector. They didn't care about how I got in the mess, they could not help me in any way.
I was so embarrassed and humiliated when the loan apps were refused. My daughters name did NOT appear on any of the paperwork and I was responsible. I don't want that to happen again. I need to get those awful statements removed from the reports. Can you help me with that? I did buy that home with the help of a friend. Both our names appear on the title but it was his good credit scores and my finances that got us in. In May, I want to apply for a refinance and take over the existing mortgage. If I can clean up the nasty 'attachments' to my credit report it would really help.
I look forward to your reply,

What you do is put the same kind of an attacthment on the account and state your side of the situation.
Make it 100 words or less. 50 is the best number.
Establish new good credit. You might try to re open that same account which is so problematic. It would show that you mean good but got caught in a bad spot. Use the free dispute form on my webite for personal info and write the letter, get in notorized, send it certified mail.

My name is Live Human and I was just looking at my credit report and I have some questions. Hopefully you can help me out. If I pay off debt that was already sent to the collection agency will that make my credit score better? Also if I cancel some cards that I have open and that are paid off will that hurt my credit? Should I just leave them open? Please email me and let me know! thanks!

I have been trying to remove some false information from my credit report.
and I went through the process of asking the Company "LHR INC." to validate the debt.
It has been over 70 days and they have yet to remove the information from my credit report.
I called them today and spoke to 4 different people each of them gave me a completely different story.
One guy got pissed when I told him the call was being recorded only after he gave me VERY WRONG INFORMATION.
He told me that even though they haven't validated the debt, the information will stay on my credit report until I pay it off. I told him the call was being recorded after he said this to me, he got very angry and hung up on me.
I recorded each of the phone calls. Would I be able to use these phone calls to file a lawsuit against them?
Any information would be very helpful.
Thank You,

Hey Bo
I have found your website very informative, for the last 3 months I have been working very hard to raise my credit score which started at a very low 524 now it is up to 554. I have paid off all my collection accounts and 2 credit card charge offs. for the last 6 months I haven't been late on any revolving or installment account. all the collections have been deleted from my credit report, although the 2 charge off credit cards shows "paid in full" they would not delete totally. I have a Truck Loan 1 yr old Harley Loan 3 years old (one 30 late pay last year(was out of the country)) credit card 500 limit which I pay off each month, and a 5000.00 signature loan which was paid off in a year. I think the thing that is really effecting my score is about 4 years ago I lost my job and couldn't make my payments and I have some 30 60 90 120 late pays. We want to purchase a home in the fall through the veterans "va" loan program and want to raise my score as quick as I can. Just looking for some things to do this quickly
Thank you for your time

Hi Bo
Recently, I was delinquent on a credit card for almost 90 days because I was unaware that I had a balance! I have NEVER missed a payment of any kind on any loan or card up until this point, and they refused to fix my report even after I paid all of the crazy fees and now have a zero balance. I am 26 and had open credit accounts for the last 5 years or so. How much is this delinquency hurting my score? I had a 720 before all of this business! the kicker is.... the past due balance was about $30! This has been VERY agravating.Any suggestions would be apreciated!

How are you? My name is Real Live Human Being. I currently live in Los Angeles, CA. and want to clean up my credit. I also want to remove any questionable or unrecognizable items. I have an address on my report that I never lived at. The address is 85 Blue Bird Lane in upstate New York. For a long time my sister was using my identity and I think she used it during her stay at this address. I was hoping you could help me and remove this address from my report. If there is anyway you could call me and let me know if this is possible I would really appreciate that. I hope to hear from you soon and have a great day. All my best.

Hi Bo,
I am browsing the web and came across your web-site which provided insight as to cleaning my own credit. Although I have managed to settle out of 5 accounts, but three of which remain stubbornly on my report. I am have tried to dispute by phone, but was surprised to learn that although they are old, it can be re-sold as new accounts to credit agencies as many time as they deem necessary, even though the statutory time limit expired. Pretty slick if you ask me. However, I am certain that if researched properly it will show that these three stubborn accounts were in fact 8 or even 9 years old. Any ideas or any help you can provide me in hopes to complete delete these three accounts from my report. As mentioned, I took care of paying off 5 accounts and have settlement letters indicating same, should I send these letters to the Credit Bureaus. I need everything cleared from my report less then 30 days from now.

One should not have to pay twice for the same.
Hi, Bo Your website is awesome!
I have a collection account that was reported to the bureau on 4/2002. I had been paying the account, but come to find out, it had to be paid off by a certain time and if it werent, they wrote it off and reported you as delinquent. This is for a dcotor's bill. I paid off the $100 immediately in 2002. The status shows as paid on my credit report, but it still shows as a collections account. How can i request that this be removed?
Beyond this collection account, last year i decided to co-sign on my brother's car loan. BIG mistake, but I wanted to give him a chance, like I was given at his age. I have found out that he has been late 5 times. But he shot by high 600 credit score down to 560. Is there any possible way to get these removed? I have taken on the payments to ensure that they are paid on time. Please advise. I am so stressed about this situation. Very hard lesson learned.

and Suggestions

Thats what one expects if they move. Creditors cant find you so they put it on your report and make you find them. You should validate the debt if you are unsure about it. http://www.oskie.com/how-i-get-paid-collection-collections-account-removed-credit-report-completely.htm

I was late on the payments but someone told me to dispute and usually they can't prove it and thay come off. Will this effect my credit since they will have to close my accounts out?Thank you,

Debt settlements are ok but they always negatively affect your score. So yes it will
I just want to say Thank you for all of the information you provide. It has helped me tremendously. I have spent close to $5,000 on people who claim to Repair Credit only to end up in a worst situation or nothing happening at all. So I recently decided to do it myself. I only wish I would have used that money toward some of my debt.
Anyway, I do have a question for you that I haven't been able to figure out on my own. On my credit report there are numerous names that are suppose to be my name or names I've used. They have different spelling or a middle initial or a letter is off of the last name, etc.etc. I have not used these names to get credit nor have I requested credit under these names. Does this hurt my credit? In addition to the various names are also addresses at residencies I never lived.
Should I be concern about them? If so, can you advise how I would go about getting them removed please.

17.00 on my credit report. I approved for a home loan
Hello,
I was reading your website and thought I would ask a question, I was looking at my credit report and found a collection agency entry on one of the three credit reports, Experian, its only for $17.00 but I need to get it off or at least show as paid, I may owe the money, I don’t know, it’s from the town I used to live in for garbage pickup service,
We are buying a house, since we had filed bankruptcy anything I can do to get my scores higher so I can get a better rate, So here is the questions:
I could pay the $17 dollars to the collection agency, try to get them to remove the entry, but what if they then notified all three credit bureaus? Then I’d be worse off
I could pay the town, then dispute it through Experian
Any other ideas?
Thanks!

Seventeen dollars is not helping or hurting your score but it needs to show paid in full. So talk to the collection agency and see if they will take it off if you pay the fee. You may need to get authorization for the collection agency to do this from the town.

Are they allowed to report written off, after bankruptcy has been discharged?

The comments do not hurt your score and the included in BK is actually very good as most BK fail to make the details available on most accounts that have been included in bankruptcy. Written off really just says the same thing as included in BK and means nothing at all.
Of course any accounts stay on credit for seven years not until a BK is discharged.
Get new credit going and make sure all your reports show your BK accounts included in BK zero balance.

How to safely use Cash Advance
How to Safely Use a Cash Advance
Cash Advances can be helpful or detrimental to your budget. Do you have a large bill, or several smaller bills, that need to be paid this week, but you don’t get paid until next week? Maybe you splurged on groceries this week, thinking that your husband made the necessary credit card payment, only to realize that you were supposed to pay it. Now, since you bought groceries, you don’t have the money to make the credit card payment this week, but you’ll have it next week. You could apply for a cash advance instead of waiting until next week and racking up a late fee.
Cash advances can get you out of a tight pickle and can also help you avoid credit problems. Taking out a cash advance won’t affect your credit score as long as you pay it off, but making a late credit card or mortgage payment, or missing a payment, will in fact harm your credit score. In the long run, a low credit score can prevent you from buying a car or even a house. In the short scheme of things, missing a rent payment could get you evicted from your residence, which is obviously detrimental to you.
Cash advances can help you when you are in temporary financial need, but they also come with their risks. To avoid these risks, always borrow responsibility when it comes to cash advances. Think of your budget and figure out how much money you can afford to borrow. Don’t forget to account for the interest charges that come with the payday loan, also. Shop around for the lowest interest rate, and take your time making a decision. Don’t borrow more than you can afford to pay back with your next paycheck, or you could end up paying hundreds of dollars more than you ever intended.
If you borrow wisely, and stick to your budget as best as possible, a cash advance, or payday loan, shouldn’t get you into too much trouble. But also weigh the consequences. For instance, if missing a rent payment will get you evicted, perhaps it’s worth going into debt for a few months if you borrow more than you can technically afford. Figure out what’s important to you before you borrow, and be wise.

I recently received a letter from them demanding $258.56 for payment of an account they recently purchased. I have a perfect credit rating and have never owed anyone this amount of money. Looking at MCM on the internet, they seem to be 99% crooked. How do you fight them? An attorney would cost more than the amount they are asking for which is probably part of their plan. From what I’ve read, once you pay them to get rid of them, they continue to come after you with other allegations.

Hi. I pulled my credit report last Friday and about had a stroke.
I have items on my credit report that belong to my ex-wife. When we divorced 4 years ago, she was to take half the credit card and be responsible for them. I took the other half. We were both to remove the other's name from the card. There are several cards that she just closed and they have zero balance. There are several that she closed and and is still paying on. AND there are several that are still open and have lots of 30, 60 and 90 day lates on them. My credit score is plummeting. I talked to Wells Fargo Bank, who the cards belong to, and they will not remove my name even though the court decree says that she has to. On the two worst cards, she owes $10,000 and $3,000. I feel hostage here. Help!
We originally opened this account un 1983. My credit score right now is sitting at 620!

That is the plight of a cosigner.
Consult your attorney but do not expect help from creditors.
Very Common I might add. Sorry
Here are the best steps to getting my wife off my credit report.
1. Any account you can close that has both names on it close now.
2. Sell any dual owed property that has both names on the loans.
3. Add a comment 50-100 words showing which accounts have both names but were assigned to your spouse in the divorce decree.
Low credit score is keeping us from buying a home. How do I get approved and raise my score?
Husband and Wife / to me / show details / Apr 10
Dear Mr. Majors,
My husband and I are getting ready to apply for a home loan, his credit score is thur Equifax is 595 and the other two report it as 601 we know that it is not a very good score to try and buy a home with. I was wondering if you could give us some advise on a company we could apply with, having a bad score like he does. We filled bankruptcy and it was discharged in May of 1999. After making it pretty good for a while (3 years or so) and started to get our credit built back up he lost his job. We didn't even see it coming he came home on a Monday and said that his last day was Thursday. There goes our credit again. He has a good job now and 601 is the highest we can get our score up, because he has 2 credit cards that is way past due and they don't want to work with us. We've wrote them letters saying we would like to make the wrong, right and one of them we haven't even heard from. I've received calls from collection agencies but they want talk to me and my husband sleeps all day (he works 3rd shift) so there is nothing we can do about those. They want even give me a number to have him call back and it don't show on his credit report as in collections. But it will give it time. On his report it just shows way past due. I'm scared of applying for and home loan and get turned down and on top of that when they check his credit score that will make it go down. Then I have to try again. I just don't want to apply again and again and all the time it is bring his score down. Please if you don't mind to help us out and get us going in the right direction.
Thank You and God Bless

Look for owner financing. MANY homes have owners that will finance for people that have good jobs. Ask around. Ask a few banks. Ask a realtor. Get into and you will be earning equity.
One has to pay the credit cards somehow someway. Negotiate to lower the balance and pay. In the mean time one needs 3 open lines of credit. i suggest getting a gas card, a regular card and a small loan that all report to bureaus. If they will not apporove you give them collateral like money mabye for the cards and a car or something for the small loan.
In 2 years your scores will be in the 650's plus.

Sounds to me like.......i would settle only with the agreement that if you pay say 30% 40% whatever it is, that they report settlement accepted and paid. After payments are complete.
I would NOT pay in full if they refuse to remove the account completely. I would concentrate on opening and maintaning new good reported credit. Make sure any new credit is reported. Use some of your money as collatral if needed but use as little as possible.
The new good credit will help you more than the old bad credit in most cases

Hello Bo,
I have come across your Website and I would like to ask you a question about Collection. I had cleaned up a collection I had on my credit report. I disputed with the credit reporting agencies, (Experian, Equifax and TransUnion). After the 30-45 day waiting period the collection and or Creditor did not respond to the dispute, therefore it was removed from my credit reports. All that happened in October 2006.
Cavalry (www.cavalryportfolioservices.com) stating that they purchased that Account from Sprint PCS, which is the one that was removed 6 months prior by not responding to the dispute.
Is it legal that they can do that? Can you please advise me on how to proceed? Is that common that they just keep sending and or selling that account around for years to come?
I greatly appreciate you help and service.

1. get another card period.
2. After 7 years your credit should already be established and current, resulting in no noticable net difference in your score. 2 years back from today is weighted heavily on the score factor.

Should go ahead and make the payments on the account the way I set it up or should I continue to wait. I left them my phone number and address but I got no response. What should I do? Thank you

Not until some action is taken like a payment.
Even then sometimes dates can be frozen if you negotiate and pay. They can do this but may say they cannot. All they have to do is post the payment and use a back date equal to the date of last activity on your acount listed on your report.

Hi Bo,
My name is Wanda. I am trying to clean up my credit file. I notice on my report and have an old JC Penny's credit card that was paid off in 1997 but the creditor is still reporting this to the all three credit bureaus. Also, I had a State tax lien which has been paid in full. On my credit file it state "paid in full" but how long does this stay on my credit?
Please email me back at your convience.
Thank you very much.

The jc penny should be disputed as old AND INACCURATE
State tax laws vary on length of credit stays. but ten years is a max after payout
Closing credit card accounts can hurt my score
Live Human / to me / show details /
Hi Bo,I didn't know that closing an account could lower my score, and I closed two accounts. It lowered my score 38 ponts! What can I do now? Can I re-open the cancelled cards? (I think one was from citibank). Or should I accept the next american express card or other offer that I get, as opposed to asking for the card? What about raising my credit limit on my existing card? I have no balance on my card, I pay it off every month. I have only one major card now and various store credit cards, all with zero balance. Thanks for your advice. Live Human

Closing and account that has no balance should not hurt your score at all.
If this is the case something else is up.
Since accounts need to be open 1 year to get a rating for your score it is usually quicker and more helpful to re open than to start from scratch.
Something else is up I think.

I paid off my loan early and it shows paid of on my report but my score is the same?
Live Human / to me / show details / Mar 30
My Old Credit Score is 658. I recently Paid off a Bank Installmant sales Contract or Loan in the Amount of $9,720. I even paid it off 2 and half years Early. I looked at my Credit Score Online. And it shows the Loan to be Paid Off/Satisfactory. But my Credit Score is still at 658 and hasn't changed at all. Why is this? How long after the Loan shows to be Paid off will my credit score be Raised? Or should it have been raised as soon as it showed to be Paid off then? Should a Credit Score raise a Soon as it shows on your report to be paid off or does it take a while?
Thanks Bo for your Help I appreeciate it.

If you have been paying on the debt awhile and you already owed less than 80% against your original loan limit the change in your score will be of little consequence as far as scores go.
Or you may have paid the loan off before a full year elapsed and received no help on your because the loan was not a rated loan due to less than one year old.
Capital one is hurting my credit report score
Live Human / to me / show details / Mar 28
Hi Bo-
Let me just say I’m very impressed with your credit help site. My husband and I have diligently been working at raising our credit. In September we pulled a 620-630 credit score. About 5 months ago we started using our capital one card for gas & groceries. I pay the card off every month. We are ready to jump on the home band wagon and were really excited to pull our credit. Thinking it was about 690-710. Boy was I surprised. We both came in about 595. I have been consumed with getting this taken care of. I have been reading about how bad Capital One is for your credit score because of their failure to put your available balance on your reports. I hate being on this end of a lesson. Here we thought we were doing the right thing to get ahead. The first step I did was contact Capital One and tell them I’m disputing our $0 available balance on the credit report. They will file a dispute and send me a letter in 10 days. I will contact the credit bureaus also.
The other question I have is, how do I remove things on my credit that are more than 7 years old? I was told to write a letter to each creditor letting them know we are purchasing a house and would like this item removed. The worst I have on record is 30-60 days delinquency 4-7 years ago. I think I’m a good candidate to remove these items.
Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated!!
I look forward to your response!
Thanks!

Need charge offs and late payments removed from my report
Live Human / to me / show details
Hello Bo, I have contacted you before, months back. I am trying to repair my credit in order to get approved for a mortgage at a good rate. I have two charge offs on my credit which have been paid off. I have letters from the collectors , stating paid in full. What do i do now. I would like the charge offs to be removed from my credit. Was wondering how to go about that. Also have a circuit city visa card that has a zero balance but a few late payments. When i contacted them about it they refused to remove them as it would be false information on my credit. If you have any help for me please inform me. Also i closed one credit card that was charging me a monthly fee (Fix your credit type card). I am looking to apply for a new card, but want to make sure my credit is up to par. Please email me back when you get a chance. Thank You
To Live Human / From Bo Majors /
The charge off will stay on your credit as you [aid them before you negotiated to have them removed so forget that whole thing.
i would try to re open the circuit city thing and establish new good credit. Takes one yr.
if the company that charged you a fee is reporting to bureaus i would keep it open for a 2 year minimum

Hi Bo,
I came across your web site looking for credit help because I have paid several people for help in the past two years and nothing has changed! I have wasted a lot of time and money and now I want to help myself!!! I recently pulled all three reports and found that everything on my report has been re-dated to the current month! It is all old collections some even past seven years! How do these collection agency’s come to the date of last activity? If I tried to validate the collection should this have happened? This was the only think I’ve done in the past couple of years. How can I get them to put the correct date of last activity if validating should not have played a part? Help!!!!

Bo Majors / to Live Human / show details / Mar 19
You need new and current credit if that is theonly thing youve done in the past couple of years.
Not sure how to answer the rest
7 years is 7 years and if you paid them off or negotiated with them 2 years ago things should be about right by now with new current good credit.

In 2003 I had a hospital bill for $177 that was just about to go into collections I negotiated with original Creditor to pay $59 for 3 months - Paid to original creditor. Immediately after I made all 3 payments I began receiving letters from the Collection Agency I have had conversations via telephone and fax with them informing them that I had paid debt to original creditor. This account remains on my credit report only for Experian (negatively) under collection accounts as "Paid" What can I do to have this removed and if so will this make a difference in my score? Can I write to NCO to ask for the account to be deleted?
Thanks so much for your website.

Bo,
Great site - not sure if you take emails anymore. I read through most of your site however I am not sure how to tackle the below.
1) Type of Account - Revolving credit via Best Buy via HSBC. 2) How old - August 05 3) Payments made - All of them/12? 4) Credit Score - 713
Basically we opened an 18 month interest free account for $3600 at Best Buy. We paid it off before the 18 month expiration and currently have a zero balance. Here's where it gets weird. Equifax has us down for an account where the first seven numbers are not ours, but the last nine are from our paid off account. They are saying we still owe $2378 on this other account. I called HSBC and they only have us on one account and it's zero.
Not sure where to go from here to prove that the other account doesn't exist or if it does, it's not mine.
Any help appreciated.

19 closed accounts on my credit report we paid off will it hurt my score

Hello,I stumbled upon your website and liked what i was reading and thought you could give me some advice. I have 19 closed accounts on my credit report including accounts we paid off when we refinanced,do these closed accounts hurt my credit score, accounts include mortgage,loans,etc.... 17 of the 19 are reported as pays as agrees and zero balance,a couple our from 1997 and 1999,and 2 are credit cards and they are reporting as a charge off, settled account.Should any of these be taking of my credit report to get my score higher?
My score is 480 on my equifax report,i had lost my job and recently had fallen behind on my mortgage, ford credit, and a loan plus 2 credit cards. My house, loan, and one credit card will be paid up this month, how much will this help my score? We want to refinance and was told we need to get over a 500 to do so and paying these up would do that, but if i can get my score in the 600's and it takes me a little longer to get a loan thats what i would like to do. thank you for your time, ant info will be appreciated.

Sounds like you arer wrecked enough to not expect miracles quickly.
Closing does not hurt your score unless you do not have three open and current reported loan or cards.
500 is a very low score and you chave serious problem, but possible the best chance to make better.
The mortgage and Ford will hurt for a long time and are practically not helpable unless you catch bad credit right as it is happening.
keep three open credit lines.
pay off and get current everything reasonable.
2 years from now your scores will be very good

Trying to raise my score with double hits on past bad credit
Live Human / to me / show details / Mar 9
Hi Bo!I'm so glad I found your website. I could really use your expert advise. Here are my questions: My credit scores are very low (663, 688, 693). I noticed that on the 663credit report, there is an accurate charge off for a very old cell phonebill. The creditor listed is not who probably ownes the debt at this time. How do I go about finding out who has the debt so I can pay it off??? My other 2 reports do not show this collection. 2 of my reports show a charge off debt originating from Sears, then sold toLivingFund. I did negotiate a payoff with LivingFund and they promised tomark me as paid in full. They did NOT do this. Additionaly, both the Searschargoff and LivingFund (both are the same debt amount) show on my creditreport. Am I being hit twice for the same bad debt???? I have been making all credit card payments on time, and more times than not, pay in full. At this time I have a few small department store cards and 3 major cards: Discover ($118 balance - $4400 credit limit/used to be$7200 but dropped me down due to old payment history) Chase Vise ($0balance - $1300 credit limit) and Capital One MasterCard ($0 balance - $998limit). I also have a checking account Visa, but that never generates abill, it's automatically deducted from my checking everytime I use the card. All my past late payments, collections, etc is all accurate. I'm jsut very concerned about the fact that the one collection agency lied about how they would report our negotiation, as well as the fact that the collection agency shows up along with the original creditor who wrote the debt off. I would think this is a double hit! Please advise me on the best wy to go forth so that I can raise my score, as I am shopping for mortgages and would like to correct all I can. Thank so much!

Real Live Human / to me / show details / Mar 7
Dear Bo:First of all, thank you so very much for your self-help advice on credit reports. It is extremely helpful and timely for me. I want to purchase a home with my fiance and wish to get pre-qualified first from a lender.I sent for my free credit reports from the government suggested cite and learned that my score in Equifax is 620 and in Experian is 680. I have several credit cards that I do not use that were listed on my credit report--something like 8 of them. I went ahead and cancelled all these cards thinking it would work against me to have so many credit cards on my report. Now I understand that that was a mistake. Can I re-open an account without it showing up as a new account? Is it worth trying to do this? Also, I had a bad debt of $86 listed on my account from an unpaid medical bill that was the result of the insurance company going to my former employer and finding that my dependent whose care this concerned, was listed as terminated from my insurance. At the time, I sent a letter to the insurance company to that affect and they said they would reprocess this. They must not have because the debt now sits on my credit account. To avoid any further threats to my score, I went ahead and paid the amount -- $80. The credit collection agency (Nationwide Credit) said they would report that the case is closed to the credit bureau. Does this mean that it will actually be removed or do I need to do something further to insure this gets done.Lastly, yes, I do have some late payments on both my mortgage (probably 1) and my car (probably 1). Is there anything I can do to mitigate the negative impact of that on my score.Thank you again for your great service to regular folks like me.Sincerely,
Real Person

I still have one remaining collection account for the amt of $695 which is set to expire in June of this year. I currently have no open credit accounts and am looking to re-establish my credit history. At this point, I am on the fence as to whether I should simply go the secured credit card route or actually wait until June when my report will be clean. I also have 2-3 old credit card accounts in good standing that were closed quite some time ago. I only worry that the reporting period will expire prior to my opening enough new accounts and getting my score up into the mid 700's. Thanks in advance.

your one year away from having a good score because there are no open and rated (1 year) credit lines on your reports. Open credit cards, or past cards, at least three, and wait for one year.

Bankruptcy from 30 years ago hurting my credit still
Real live Human / to me / show details / Mar 4
Hi – I have perhaps the strangest question you have ever received. II filed for a bankruptcy in 1974 (32 years ago). I have been turned down for credit at American Express because they say I have a balance of over $2,000 left over from that bankruptcy. I was under the bankruptcy for almost 3 years and then came out from under it, made arrangements to pay each and every creditor off and did so. Unfortunately I do not have records to prove this as it happened 32 years ago. Today, credit is Excellent. I have had 2 – 30 day late’s in the last 10 years or more. Do you have any idea what I can do to get them to give me a credit card. I am unwilling to pay $2,000 to get a credit card and that is what they say I must do. I want this credit card because it is the only one you can use at our local Costco stores.
I am in the process of updating my free credit reports and have learned the importance of staying on top of it monthly and will be joining your service as soon as I do get it updated in the next 30-60 days. Any advice you can give me would be appreciated.

Hi maybe this is not supposed to happen but it has. I have not had credit with American Express since the bankruptcy in 1974. In fact that is the company that I felt forced me into bankruptcy 32 years ago. They have the date right when the bankruptcy was filed and absolutely say I cannot get a credit card unless I pay the outstanding balance. I apply for credit with them about every 2 months just for the heck of it and they always turn me down. When I inquire, they always give the same above reason. Is there anyway I can force the issue that they cannot turn me down simply based on a bankruptcy that is 32 years old. This is not a joke. I am totally sincere in this. I want the credit card so I can use it at Costco and I guess it is just sort of the principle of the whole thing. You are welcome to call me collect at 206-794-1996 if you have any questions. I am a 67 retired school teacher and have guarded my credit so strongly ever since that bankruptcy. I am completely sincere in asking you if there is anything I can do. It is the strangest thing I have ever run across. I have no credit card debt, own 2 homes and make over 60,000 a year and none of that seems to make any difference. Thanks for any info you can give that may help me. Donna

Will this increase dramatically once I graduate and become employed? I know my debt-to-income ratio will, how will this affect my credit score? Mr. Majors, good morning. I ran across your information related to credit reporting and wondered if you'd take a moment to answer my question.First, I only have (1) open credit card, paid off my last home loan, paid off my home equity loan and have never made a late payment on anything when I did carry credit cards. I keep an eye on my credit report and a ke exceptional pride in living non-plastic and noted my credit score was 700 just 2 months ago. I have not opened any accounts and recently was merely querying lenders for my new home financing however, now my credit report isaround 660?? I checked my report and found no erroneous accounts listed or opened, all my data reflecting on time, full payment of previous accounts so I am at a loss as to why my score is gone down??? I do have (3) inquiriesfrom mortgage lenders (quick home loans, countrywide, etc..) but had no idea inquiries could affect my score. My question is, how long will these inquiries affect my score and how I canget it back to where it was or higher without opening new accounts?

The inquiries are not hurting your score at all soemthing else is wrong I would wonder if you have enough credit as it sounds you have eliminated everything. The usual suspect is 80% owed against total limit borrow on your report somewhere. Thats About All I can guess without seeing your report myself

Cancel in less than 30 days and the report and score are "totally free". It's 9.95 per month if I decide to keep it longer than 30 days. I would keep the service (if it's just 9.95 a month) for a month or two at least and look for the judgements future removal or deletion.

Twelve Facts You Must Know About Debt
If You are Serious about Getting rid of Your Debt
by Dave Ireland
Hello, I’m Dave Ireland, a retired corporate executive and currently a Professional Speaker, Author and Educator. I have been speaking on the subject of debt elimination for over 10 years. People who have heard me speak know that I have a problem with conventional wisdom. Not all of it is bad but most of it contains ideas that people blindly accept without thinking them through. I encourage people to challenge conventional wisdom as part of developing a True Financial Freedom plan. With the goal of encouraging people to think conventional wisdom through, I present some of my favorite “unconventional” thoughts.
Do not waste your time and energy trying to manage your debts.
Credit cards (and most debt) are just like drugs; they make you feel good in the beginning. But for some of us, there is a high price to pay in the long run. In the beginning, it feels like free money and we are joyous and happy about all the new stuff we have bought. However, 30 days later, the bill comes in and the pain begins. If you are $70,000 in credit card debt like I was, the pain can become overwhelming!
I’m not addressing people with debt problems. There are consumer debt counseling services available for those people. What about middle class American’s paying their bills but feel like they are just treading water; making no real progress and getting sick and tired of being sick and tired of their debt? I’m talking about people making $50,000 a year and spending $55,000; making $20,000 and spending $25,000; or making $200,000 a year and spending $220,000 and trying to figure out; what is wrong with this picture?
What’s wrong is the fact that being in debt is a brand new phenomenon of the last 30 to 40 years and it does not have to be this way.
What should you do?
Don’t just settle for managing your debts. That is just a short-term approach. Start eliminating your debts today, and begin building true financial freedom! And if you can’t do it yourself, hire a debt elimination expert to do it for you. I’m not referring to consumer credit counseling or debt negotiation/settlement companies that have programs that dramatically reduce your credit score. They may be appropriate for someone who has a major debt problem and already has a low credit score, but they are not appropriate for the typical middle class Americans like you.
I’m referring to someone just like you; someone who actually has the “Great American Debt Opportunity”; that is the opportunity to turn their debt into real wealth for themselves and their family. I’m referring to companies that manage your liabilities in such a way that credit scores immediately improve and debts are rapidly eliminated; systematically, one at a time, until all consumer debt is gone in about 3 to 4 years and most 30-year mortgages are eliminated in another 4-5 years.
You’re smart enough to hire a stock broker or financial planner to mange your assets or an insurance expert to make sure you’re properly protected, so don’t think you have to go it alone with respect to your debts. Most Americans are spending $30, $40 or more a day on interest fees. If you ever want to be financially secure, you absolutely must break this viscous cycle of debt management and start eliminating your debt. Think about it, over the past 2 to 3 months you have probably spent three to four thousand dollars on interest fees.
You must start now, today; you can’t afford not too.
Do not fall for the “Interest Rate Trap”
Conventional wisdom has all of us trying to improve our financial situation by pursuing a strategy of getting as low an interest rate as possible. We are scrambling to get lower interest rates by doing expensive balance transfers or expensive refinancing in order to save a miniscule amount of interest cost or get a useless tax deduction, while the creditors are robbing us blind.
There are times when it makes sense to restructure high interest debt into low interest rates, but that should be the exception not the rule. It is all smoke and mirrors and here is why.
Studies have shown that people who consolidate loans are worse off than they would be if they had just left everything alone. This is what typically happens. They get a consolidation loan, let’s say a Home Equity Line of Credit; they pay off their credit cards and car loans and now they are told that they just eliminated their debts. What a joke. They owed $170,000 before and now they still owe $170,000 after consolidating; no change. However, the argument is that it’s good because their interest rates are lower, monthly payments are lower and it all tax deductible; and that is good. NO! NO! NO!
Why do I say it’s not good? You just created a 15 or maybe even a 30 year car loan. And government studies show that within a matter of days the typical American will be maxing out new credit cards and within a year or two deciding to buy new expensive cars; and they still have the consolidation loan on top of all the old debt, which has come back as new debt.
See number five below for a discussion of the tax deduction and find out what a farce that is.
Nothing fundamental has changed, except they are further in debt and more frustrated than ever. Consolidation Loans are a financial disaster for most people, unless they have a plan to pay them off rapidly.
A 13 percent mortgage that is better than a 7%?
The creditors understand the “time value of money” and so will you after you read the following.
Did you know that a 13% mortgage can be far better than a 7% mortgage? Now that is more than unconventional thinking, that is down right controversial. But hear me out. Let’s say you go out and get a $100,000 mortgage at 7%. You will pay about $150,000 in interest cost over the 30 year life of the loan. You say, Dave, that’s normal, everyone knows that a $100,000 house (if you could buy a decent house for a 100k in this day and age) will cost you about two to three hundred thousand dollars, depending on the interest rate. That’s where conventional wisdom goes astray again. It’s not dependent on just the interest rate. As a matter of fact, the “time value of money” is much more important to the total cost of interest than the interest rate itself.
Here is the rest of the story as Paul Harvey would say. Get that same $100,000 mortgage at 13% and pay it off in 7 years or so. Your cost of interest has dramatically been reduced to $50,000. Now that you have been told the rest of the story, I ask you this simple question; which would you rather have, a 7% mortgage that costs you $150,000, or a 13% mortgage for only $50,000? It’s not a trick question. Think about it. And as you do, you may say, “hey Dave, what’s wrong with a 7% mortgage that I pay off in 7. And I say, “Not a bad idea”. Now your cost of interest drops to about $30,000, saving you another $20,000. However, here is the point of the story. Reducing the interest rate from 13% down to 7% only saves you about $20,000, while cutting the term of the loan by 23 years saves you about $100,000; about 5 times more. Folks, chasing lower interest rates for whatever reason is a waste of time and energy compared to reducing the time you are in debt. The “time value of money” trumps the interest rate, every time.
Point two: How does one pay off a mortgage in 7 years? It’s easy; just increase your mortgage payment by about 3 times its normal amount. How does one do that? Get rid of all your consumer debt and add those monthly payments to the principal payment on your regular monthly mortgage. How does one get rid of the consumer debt? Use a roll up process where you payoff the debt with the smallest balance first, and when it’s paid off, you roll that payment into the next smallest debt. Using this systematic approach will eliminate your consumer debt in about 3 to 4 years and your 30-year mortgage in another 4-5 years for most middle class Americans. However, I will worn you, it’s a lot easier said, than done. Why did I suggest using a competent company that has an automatic debt elimination service? Simple; get all the competent help you can. Don’t take any chances that you may not have the time; energy, discipline or wherewithal to get rid of your debt ASAP, especially if it is high interest, such as a 13% mortgage or high credit card debts with a long loan payment schedule. At 30 years, your cost of interest for the 13% mortgage will be an astonishing $300,000 in interest cost on a $100,000 house.
Even a low 5% student loan, paid off over 30 years, will cost you twice as much as you originally borrowed. It’s important to automate the process and make sure it happens. If not you will be in debt forever, as many of the baby boomers are realizing.
The analogy that makes the most sense to me is losing weight. The concept is easy; just burn more calories than you take in! You do that and I guarantee you will lose weight; I’ll stake my life on it. Getting out of debt is the same way. Just prioritize your debts (and the highest interest rate is not the best way to pay off debt) and roll one debt into the other and I guarantee you will be debt free. However, like losing weight, it’s a lot easier said than done. We are faced with offers for consolidation loans, new toys to try, new things to buy. Like losing weight, the marketers are constantly bombarding us with new “Twinkies”, new restaurants to visit, etc.
Thus, it is almost impossible for us to lose weight or get out of debt.
If creditors could, they would keep you in debt forever; and they are doing it with interest only loans. Many Americans are retiring with six, seven, eight hundred dollar mortgage payments. Are you now seeing what you are up against? Getting out of debt is not going to be easy, so get all the help you can; you are going to need it!
With all the corporate downsizing and layoffs, it may be a good idea to own your home.
To determine if you own your home, skip two mortgage payments and you will quickly realize who actually owns your home. You may think interest rates are low and you can do better by investing your money someplace other than your house. Please, look closely at your mortgage statement. For most of you, more than 90% of your payment goes to the bank in the form of interest. That’s 90% interest, not 7%. Your actual mortgage payment is a minuscule 10% or less of your total monthly payment.
Don’t payoff your mortgage; it’s the last tax deduction we have left.
If you have a tax planner, financial planner or friend giving you this advice, get a new one...FAST! Yes, while you have a mortgage, it may be appropriate to take the tax deduction, but the deduction is not a reason to keep your mortgage. While you are paying out tens of thousands of dollars in interest over a 30-year period, you are only getting back from the IRS, 15, 25 or 35 percent at most, depending on your tax bracket. And if you only have the mortgage you may be better off taking the standard deduction in place of itemizing. The standard deduction is now over ten thousand dollars for a married couple. To beat that you must be paying a lot of interest on the mortgage.
Why give away dollar bills to the bankers just to get back pennies from the IRS? It makes no sense if you really look at your options and think it through.
Pay yourself first.
No way! Government studies show that 96% of Americans do not achieve financial freedom by the time they retire at age 65 (or is it 66 or 67 for some of us). Conventional wisdom wants you to pay yourself first, but it just doesn’t seem to work for most people.
Here’s why: A $2000 credit card balance at 17.9% interest will cost you $6827 to pay off over the 30-year and 5 month payment plan your friendly credit card company has you on. That’s right, by paying the minimum monthly payment that the bank offers you each month, you will pay nearly $5000 in interest and about 3 ½ times more than you originally borrowed. That’s worse than a 30-year mortgage.
Why not pay your bankers first and in the long run keep more of your money for yourself and your family!
Give yourself a 46% raise by eliminating all your debts.
The typical American family uses about 40 to 50 percent of their paycheck to service their debts; mortgages, car loans, student loans credit card and etc. If you did not have these monthly payments, you could increase your monthly cash flow by the same amount without begging your boss for a raise. Take charge and give yourself a raise by eliminating this unnecessary and burdensome debt.
Get out of debt now!
According to the best selling book, The Millionaire Next Door, by Bill Danko and Tom Stanley, millionaires in our society do not have consumer debt and they own their own cars, homes and their lives. The idea of using other people’s money is a new phenomenon of the last 30 or 40 years. My grandmother did not have credit card debt and she lived a lot less stressful life than I did when I was a quarter million dollars in debt. In the old days, they had the audacity to pay cash for their cars (no leases) and some even paid cash for their homes or at most, had a 5-year mortgage; not the 15, 30 and 40 year or interest only mortgages of today.
Speaking about credit cards. I’m not an advocate of doing total plastic surgery on yourself. How are you going to rent cars, reserve hotel rooms, buy stuff off the internet without a credit card? It’s nearly impossible. So here’s my advice, if you have 18 credit cards go ahead and cut up 16 or 17 of them. You probably only need one or two at the most. Now don’t close the accounts. That will hurt you credit score. But then again, have you ever heard the saying, “Good credit is equivalent to good bondage”. So don’t be putting all your energy into having a perfect credit score. Whether you have a 700 score or an 800 score is not as important to your financial well being as being debt free. Eliminate your debt and you will have a great credit score no matter what.
Also, I don’t think that debt is bad either. I don’t even think debt is good. It just “is”. It’s like fire. Fire can heat your house, heat your body, but what else can it do to your house? See my point.
As you looking for ways to pay off your debt, focus on the smallest debt first.
Put all your energy into eliminating your smallest balance debt first, regardless of its interest rate. Do this by investing any extra funds into the smallest balance and get a real sense of accomplishment when you eliminate that debt in a matter of months, in place of years. Then go onto the next smallest debt and achieve real confidence and self-esteem as you eliminate one debt after the other in a matter of month in place of years.
I know that conventional wisdom wants you to pay off the debt with the highest interest rate first, but debt is paid off so fast, that the interest rates become irrelevant. Remember it’s the time value of money that counts, the term of the loan is what’s important, not the interest rates
Another point, the smallest debt method may actually be more cost effective in some cases. However, the psychological advantage is huge.
To achieve True Financial Freedom, invest extra funds into your debt before
you put money into traditional investments (stock market, etc).
Do this by making extra payments on your smallest balance first. Do this easily, by using the funds that you are currently putting into traditional investments. When you have the first debt paid off, put all the money you had been investing into your first debt, into the next smallest debt. Continue this debt elimination process until you reach your mortgage which usually will be your largest debt and the last one you will eliminate.
Following this process you will eliminate most consumer debt in 3 to 4 years and then eliminate most 30-year mortgages in another 4-5 years.
To get a guaranteed, risk free, tax free and commission free double digit
return, you do not have to be a Wall Street Financial Wizard.
Just invest in your debt. It’s risk free because I don’t know of any banker who will not take your money and stop charging you 7%, 18%, 29% or whatever interest you are paying on your debts. It’s guaranteed to happen. And it is tax free, not just tax deferred.
Why? Because if you agree with Ben Franklin that a penny saved is a penny earned, when you pay off your debt ahead of schedule, you are going to save (earn) a lot of money and no one from the IRS is ever going to come to take any of that earned (saved) money. It is truly tax free.
In the textbook, Invest In Your Debt, it is shown that the typical American family will receive an equivalent 37.13% return by investing 10 percent of their monthly gross income into their debt. Unless you have 2.64 children and 2.98 cars in the garage, you probably will not get a 37.13 percent return. With my ADE® Students, I’ve seen as high as 55%, and as low as 15%. However, the point is, you will get a substantial double digit equivalent return on your debt investment, which will be a guaranteed, risk free, tax free return. And you will not need to pay a sales person or stock broker any commissions.
When you are debt free, take the money you were wasting on debt, typically
30 to 40 percent of your gross pay, and put it into more traditional
investments.
You are now paying one, two, three thousand dollars or more each and every month on your debts. When you are debt free, you will no longer have to make any debt payments, this money is all yours and you can invest this same money into traditional investments. Because you are out of debt 15 to 25 years sooner, you can easily accumulate a million dollars or more of future wealth for yourself and your family. You now have the “time value of money” working for you, not against you. You can do all this on your current income, while most Americans are still struggling just to get out of debt and pay off their mortgage.

Collection for MCI and another telephone company hurt my credit report and scores
Live Human
to me / show details / Feb 27
Hello Bo,
I recently purchased a copy of my credit report from all three bureaus. I saw I had two collection accounts from over a year and a half ago. This is the first time I had even heard of them. The first is for a collection agency for an MCI long distance account in the amount of $39.00. The second is from a collection agency for a telephone account in the amount of $139.00
I first called the collection agency for the telephone account and asked them what the collection was for. They informed me that they cannot provide me with that information and I would have to contact the original creditor to obtain that information. I did so and received copies of bills which did show that I had a balance on the account after I moved, which I am willing to completely admit to, and take care of. It was an oversight on my part when I moved and I do owe them this money.
I then called the collection agency back, and told them that I would do what I could to satisfy the debt if they could send me something in writing stating that they will completely remove the record from my credit report. The gentlemen asked for my address and told me he would get a letter out that same day stating something to the effect that once the debt is paid, they will update my credit report with the status as paid. I then informed him that I was actually requesting that the collection be completely removed from my credit report, and he told me that they cannot remove something from the credit report once it has been posted, its just not possible. He told me I would have to contact the original creditor to see if there was anyway they could get the record removed. I then called the original creditor and asked them if they could remove the record completely if I were to satisfy the debt. I was told that they "do nothing with credit and credit reports" and that I would have to contact the collection agency in regards to this.
This is when I realized I was getting the run-around with these two companies and started researching on the internet more. I came across your site and read just about every article pertaining to my situation. I wish I would have found your site sooner! What can I do to get these removed? Should I satisfy the debt with the original creditor if possible, then dispute the collection agencies reports? Should I continue to try to negotiate with the collection agency?
I am desperate to get these taken care of so we can purchase a house in the next 12-18 months. My wife and I have already completely paid off one high balance (87%) credit card which has not been updated on my credit report yet, and will be paying off the next high balance (87%) completely within 2 weeks. I know I can dramatically improve my score once I the reports get updated with these payoffs (continuing to keep the accounts open). The icing on the cake would be to get these collection accounts removed! I think these are hurting me just as much as, if not more than, the high balances on the credit cards. Lets see just how high I can get more score with your help! Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this. I realize you are most likely a busy person, and I do sincerely appreciate the time you take to help others like me out!

The collections are so small I would pay them and take paid in full with no dates changed for date of last activity if possible. If these are recent, which they must be, the date want help much anyway.
Seems to be too much difference in your scores.
640's will get you in a house with decent debt / income ratios.
So I would concentrate on the 2 lower number reports at first.
Utilities do not offer much help in most cases and its is better served to pay and go on.
Sounds to me like you have done everything right and as best you can. I would keep trying if you've called only once just to make sure.

Thanks Bo,
The dates on the two collections are as follows:
$39.00, opened 1/06, reported 2/06
$139.00 opened 3/05, reported 1/07
There is a large difference in my credit scores as two of my loans in the past were not reported to anyone but Equifax, and one correct credit card which is not being reported to the others. I assume there is no way to get those loans/cards reported to the other agencies? Should I try working with the collection agencies, or the original creditors?
Thanks Again!

I would just pay them if i got much resistance. The amounts are not enough to hurt that much other than they are new and unpaid. So paying can do nothing but help your score.
Experian dispute online no help. Will raise my credit score if I dispute by mail and pay?

Hey Bo,
I just happen to stumble on your website looking for the address to Experian. I am locked out to dispute online, and they want me to order a report from them before they give me an address. So, I found it anyway on your website. I do not know exactly what to dispute, but I have had items removed in the past. Hey, here's a question: if the amount on the bad debt is higher, will it raise your credit score more than settleing an account with a small balance? What about medical bills? I have two that are around 600 dollars total. What can I do about those? Should I contact and negotiate a settlement amount with the creditors, to reflect settlement or completely take it off? Any info will help me! Thanks so much.
Sincerely,
Live Human

I filed bankruptcy and a credit cards still shows as unpaid and I can't get a motgage
Live Human / to me / show details / Feb 25
Dear Bo, I filed for chapter 13 in January 2002 and was discharged from it March of 2005. I have been trying to get financing for a home purchase but no luck. I have been told many different reasons for not getting the loan but after meeting with a Country Wide Home Loans and was told the main reason for not qualifying was a debt that was showing on my credit report. The debt is more than likely a credit card that I had with First Union but they merged with Wachovia around that time. It shows up as a debt to Wachovia but the amount that was owed differed from the First Union amount listed on my BR papers by 725 dollars less and the last 4 numbers at the end of the debt for that account don't match either. It is listed as a closed account as of November 2001 and has been charged off how do I remove this from CR? Do I write dispute letter and say that this was part of my bankruptcy but was not since I had no debts to Wachovia. Can it be removed since the closed account date predates my BR date? I'm confused can you help?
Thanks in advance,

Credit card late payments that were errors and charged off are now showing up as bad credit.

Hello,
Sorry to bother you... but you seemed to be the most knowledgable person on this matter
I had 5 months of nonpayment on my credit card (balance of $300).
For the last 3 months I did not receive a statement, due to a system error. I later got a letter from the credit card company apologizing for the system error.
Then they resent a copy of the 3 statements that had not been mailed out. Lets say months 3, 4, and 5. The statement for month 5 had a notice that if I did not make payment within 30 days after due date, that my account would be bad credit or charged-off and reported to the credit bureaus.
I'm contesting the charge off, because I was not notified of the action that would be taken... what are my options? I am willing to pay the entire $300, but want to change what is being reported to the credit bureaus.

I hope you saved the letters stating system errors or its your word against theirs and they win those battles. I would negotiate with the lender and pay any fees that can be removed for. 300 is in the don't even consider NOT PAYING that one off. No matter what pay it off, but try to get relief. As you said it was their error

I would check it now and later, but in 30 days everything should be totally cleared up on your report for sure.
Does paying a collection hurt my credit score?
Hello-
I recently read somewhere that by paying items in collection, it will actually hurt my credit score. Is that true?
I currently have several items in collections on my credit report, but the total I owe is only around $350, so I was planning on just paying them off once I get my tax refund. How do you think this will affect my credit score, which is only a lousy 550-ish right now. My goal is to bring my credit score up over the next few years.
Thanks a lot!!
