Hello,I stumbled upon your website and liked what i was reading and thought you could give me some advice. I have 19 closed accounts on my credit report including accounts we paid off when we refinanced,do these closed accounts hurt my credit score, accounts include mortgage,loans,etc.... 17 of the 19 are reported as pays as agrees and zero balance,a couple our from 1997 and 1999,and 2 are credit cards and they are reporting as a charge off, settled account.Should any of these be taking of my credit report to get my score higher?
My score is 480 on my equifax report,i had lost my job and recently had fallen behind on my mortgage, ford credit, and a loan plus 2 credit cards. My house, loan, and one credit card will be paid up this month, how much will this help my score? We want to refinance and was told we need to get over a 500 to do so and paying these up would do that, but if i can get my score in the 600's and it takes me a little longer to get a loan thats what i would like to do. thank you for your time, ant info will be appreciated.

Sounds like you arer wrecked enough to not expect miracles quickly.
Closing does not hurt your score unless you do not have three open and current reported loan or cards.
500 is a very low score and you chave serious problem, but possible the best chance to make better.
The mortgage and Ford will hurt for a long time and are practically not helpable unless you catch bad credit right as it is happening.

keep three open credit lines.
pay off and get current everything reasonable.
2 years from now your scores will be very good

Thanks for the advice, the mortgage guy said the same thing, but in a month we'll be paid up on everything so hopefully we can get this back on track.
