Collection demanding 258.56 payment on an account they purchased but it is not mine.

I recently received a letter from them demanding $258.56 for payment of an account they recently purchased. I have a perfect credit rating and have never owed anyone this amount of money. Looking at MCM on the internet, they seem to be 99% crooked. How do you fight them? An attorney would cost more than the amount they are asking for which is probably part of their plan. From what I’ve read, once you pay them to get rid of them, they continue to come after you with other allegations.
