In 2003, Dell billed me twice on a computer I purchased (once on my AMEX and once on a Dell Preferred Credit card I never opened. ) The dell preferred account went to collections. I complained to Dell executive offices. Dell refunded the charge on my AMEX card and removed the finance charges on the Dell preferred card and told me to pay the collection agency just for the computer and all derogatory information would be removed from the credit reporting agency.
I have an email from a man at Dell executive offices and in his email he says, Dell has issued the credit necessary to correct the extra charges, please call Dell Preferred accounts and they will be the ones that will send the letter and remove any derogatory remarks on your credit report at this point.
I contacted Dell Preferred account and they faxed me a letter that says, “Per our conversation, I have adjusted the account to show pays as agreed. Once the adjustment is fixed the reporting will go thru. This is for your records”.
In 2004, the Experian report was fixed to say “closed, never late “ but I just got my credit report from Experian and now it says “paid in settlement and was 180 days past due in the past”. They changed it and I think this is so unfair because in good faith I paid the collection agency.

dispute the item as incorrect and include a copy of your email
if that doesn't work re contact dell for clarification

Thanks for your reply. By the way, I just clicked on your link and signed up with that credit reporting website and I got my credit scores. Transunion: 700, Experian: 685 and Equifax: 690.
So do you think I should just leave it alone or should I still sent the dispute letter

yes
leave that alone
those are great scores
I wouldn't sitr up any dust
